Wonder - R. J. Palacio
I don't have enough words for this book! I'm sure you've heard great things, but until you've read this with a child (or a class of children), or discussed the story line with them, I'm not sure you can truly appreciate it. I've now read this twice aloud as a class novel, and each time, it's like a circle-time/class-meeting every time we've sat down to read. It's relatable, and impacting, and world-changing for a lot of kids and adults alike.
Rating: 6 out of 5. I would read this a hundred times and still be impressed.
Age suggestion: 10+. As much as I love it, I do think it's important to be covered at the right time.
Ability level: 10+. I'm sure there are 9-year-olds who could enjoy this, even some 8-year-olds, but I don't think it would have the same impact socially.
Content notes: There's a few boyfriend/girlfriend references, that make sense for upper primary rather than mid. The youngest I've read this to is end of Grade 4, although now that the movie is out, it may be more accessible.
The book to movie review is definitely coming. Spoiler alert: I cried in both. If you, your students or your child/ren have not read this yet, DO IT NOW!!!
